BEFORE YOU BOOK TIER 2

Complete Part 1 first — it's free, and takes about 90 minutes.

Part 1 is the free national e-learning module for the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training. It's required for everyone before moving on to the next stage — whether that's Tier 1's 1-hour webinar or Tier 2's full training day. You complete it independently, in your own time, via the NHS's e-learning for healthcare (e-LfH) platform — we don't deliver Part 1 ourselves.

WHY THIS TRAINING CARRIES HIS NAME

Oliver McGowan's story.

Oliver was an 18-year-old autistic young man with a learning disability and epilepsy. In 2016, he died after being given an antipsychotic medication against his and his family's wishes — a death a national review later called potentially avoidable. His mother, Paula McGowan, campaigned for change, and in 2022 training in his name became a legal requirement for every CQC-registered health and social care provider in England.

HOW THE TRAINING WORKS

Two tiers, one required first step.

Everyone completes Part 1 first, regardless of role. After that, the training splits into two tiers depending on what you do.

01

Step 1: Part 1 e-learning

Free, around 90 minutes, completed independently online. Required for everyone before either tier below.

02

Tier 1: non-patient-facing roles

A 1-hour live webinar for staff who aren't patient-facing and don't make decisions about someone's care. We don't deliver Tier 1 — your employer or another provider can help you access it.

03

Tier 2: patient-facing & decision-making roles

A full day of face-to-face training for anyone who is patient-facing or makes decisions about someone's care, including directors. This is what we deliver. Tier 2 doesn't require the Tier 1 webinar first — just Part 1.

04

Not sure which applies to you?

Employers are responsible for confirming which tier their team needs. Get in touch if you'd like help working it out.
